Aberdeen, S.D. – The Northern State University soccer team won their second straight match from home this afternoon, defeating Concordia- St. Paul 3-1. With the victory, the Wolves improve to 6-6-0 overall and 4-6-0 in league play, while the Golden Bears drop to 2-6-4 overall and 2-3-4 in the NSIC.
NSU outshot Concordia- St. Paul 11-6 in the first half, however both teams came up empty handed and the score remained 0-0. In half two, the Wolves returned in full force as
Stephany Estrada and
Anna Bondy teamed up offensively. Less than two minutes into action, Bondy kicked a soft-touch cross off the keeper and into the foot of freshman
Stephany Estrada for the first goal of the match. The duo paired up once again in the 51
st minute when Estrada received the pass from Bondy in the middle of the box. The freshman struck the ball past CSP's goalkeeper Emily Nelson, to give the Wolves a 2-0 advantage.
Northern State added to their lead just a minute later, this time off of a corner kick. Allison Byrd played the ball back into the feet of
Alexis Lewis at the left corner of the box. Lewis placed the ball inside to
Anna Bondy who was able to connect for her 13
th goal of the season.
Concordia- St. Paul looked to strike back in the 82
nd minute when Jordan Rowan-Stafford dribbled the ball through the middle of the pitch and past senior goalkeeper
Stacey Cavill. The goal made it a 3-1 match, however the NSU defense held the lead for the Wolves to record their sixth victory of the season.
NSU outshot the Golden Bears 18-15 in the game, while each team recorded seven shots on goal. Freshman
Stephany Estrada led the offense with three shots on goal and two goals.
Anna Bondy also had a strong performance with five shots, two assists and one goal.
Stacey Cavill recorded six saves with just one goal allowed in 90 minutes in the net for the Wolves.
NSU will continue action from home tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. as they take on the Minnesota State Mavericks from Jerde Field.
