Aberdeen, S.D. – The Northern State University swept the weekend Saturday with a 3-0 defeat of Bemidji State from Wachs Arena. The No. 14 Wolves improved to 13-4 overall and 6-3 in league action after the victory.
The Wolves hit .391 in the win, spurred by a .483 attack percentage in the second set and two hitters above .700 on the night. Northern took the match with set scores of 25-19, 25-21, and 25-14. The Wolves tallied just five attack errors with 41 kills and notched a season high 14 service aces led by
Ashley Rozell. The freshman rallied the Wolves with six of her seven aces in the game in the third and final set, as Northern went on a 14 point run.
Holly Vancura and
Tori Biach led the team with 11 kills apiece in the win. Biach hit a team second best .786 behind
Kellie Schmit with a .833 mark. Schmit notched five kills, while
Lauren McCafferty and
Lexi Lockhart tallied seven and six respectively. Rozell notched the team's final kills, while pacing the offense with 37 total assists for a .391 attack percentage.
Libero
Jaiden Langlie led the Northern defense with ten digs, followed by Vancura and Rozell and seven apiece. The Wolves notched a total of 40 digs in the win, while Lockhart and Biach combined for the team's only block. The Wolves held the Beavers to a .272 attack percentage, forcing a total of 13 errors.
After a close first and second set, Northern broke things open in the third. Leading 9-6 in the third, Northern tallied 13 straight points with a score of 22-6 on the board. The Beavers fought back for six points of their own, however the 16 point lead was enough to secure the victory for NSU.
Northern will hit the road next weekend for a pair of games versus No. 1 Minnesota Duluth and St. Cloud State. The Wolves will face-off with the Bulldogs at 7 p.m. on Friday, and then match-up against the Huskies at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
