Aberdeen, S.D. – After a weekend away, the Northern State University volleyball team returned to Wachs Arena and defeated Minnesota Crookston 3-1. The Wolves improved to 12-4 overall and 5-3 in Northern Sun play.
The Wolves quick took a 2-0 lead, defeating the Golden Eagles with set scores of 25-16 and 25-20. Minnesota Crookston however battled back to take the third set 25-21, and made it a close one in the fourth as the Wolves came out on top 25-22. Northern hit .194 in the match with 42 kills, while Crookston hit a game high .203 with 53 kills. The Wolves however capitalized on 26 Golden Eagle errors in the match and ten service aces.
Holly Vancura led the Northern offense with 14 kills and a .278 attach percentage.
Tori Biach matched Vancura hitting .278 as well, while adding six kills and a team best five blocks.
Lauren McCafferty was second on the team with ten kills, followed by Biach.
Jenna Reiff and
Lexi Lockhart followed with four kills each, while
Kellie Schmit notched three.
Ashley Rozell paced the Wolves with 39 assists, averaging 9.75 per set, and notched a team best three service aces alongside Vancura.
Jaiden Langlie was a ball hound for the Wolves on defense making plays on both sides of the court. The Wolves libero led the team with 19 digs (and countless others), while also adding one ace.
Annika van Oosbree was second on the team with 11 digs of her own, followed by Vancura with eight.
In the fourth and final set the Wolves fought back from a 21-15 deficit, to score seven of eight points and tie things at 22 all on Rozell's second service ace of the run. NSU did not look back as they tallied the final three points of the game to secure the four set match victory.
Northern will return to Wachs Arena tomorrow for a 4 p.m. match-up with the Bemidji State Beavers.
