Aberdeen, S.D. – The Northern State University soccer team concluded their final home match of the 2016 season with a 2-0 victory over the University of Mary. With the win, the Wolves improve to 9-7-0 overall and 7-7-0 in the NSIC, while the Marauders fall to 3-10-3 overall and 3-9-2 in conference play.
Northern State was first to record a goal in the match, coming in the 23
rd minute of action.
Alison Byrd lined up for one of NSU's 13 total corner kicks and found the head of
Darian Leschewski. The redshirt sophomore knocked the ball past U-Mary goalkeeper, Hannah Smith, for the first goal of the contest.
Darian Leschewski added to the Northern State lead just two minutes later. Senior
Anna Bondy shuffled the ball to Leschewski from 40 yards out, where she launched the ball into the net to make it a 2-0 match. Northern State maintained the two goal lead for the entire second half to pick up their ninth victory of the season.
The Wolves outshot the Marauders 22-13 in the 90 minute match. NSU tallied eight shots on goal to U-Mary's six total.
Darian Leschewski led the Northern State offense with six shots, four shots on goal and two goals.
Anna Bondy aided the Wolves with seven shots, three shots on goal and one assist.
Senior goalkeeper
Stacey Cavill collected her third-consecutive shutout, recording six saves in the net for NSU. The shutout is the fifth of the season for Cavill.
Northern State will return to action on Sunday to face No. 11 Minot State at 1 p.m. on the road for their final regular season match.
