Photo GalleryAberdeen, S.D. – The Northern State University men's basketball returned to the victory side tonight, defeating Minot State 86-71 from Wachs Arena. The Wolves improved to 8-7 overall and 4-5 in Northern Sun action.
The Wolves opened the game with an alley-oop dunk by
Carter Evans, assisted by
Darin Peterka, which proved to set the tone for the night. NSU took control as the first half came to a close and held strong through the final 20 minutes of action. It was a physical battle as the two teams paced each other on each end of the floor.
A total of five Wolves notched double-digit points in the victory led by redshirt-sophomore
DJ Pollard. Pollard recorded a season high 19 points, shooting 8-of-12 from the floor and adding three rebounds and three assists. Close behind was
Darin Peterka with 18 on the night. Peterka notched a team leading five assists and a team second best seven rebounds.
Starters
Skye Warwick and
Carter Evans each added 11 points to the team total, while
Mack Arvidson recorded 15 off the bench. Evans earned himself a double-double, leading the team with ten rebounds. He was 5-of-8 from the floor and added two assists and two blocks.
Northern lead a majority of the game, outscoring the Beavers 46-41 in the first half and 40-30 in the final 20 minutes. The Wolves shot 57.6 percent from the floor, 52.2 percent from the arc, and 75.0 percent from the foul line. NSU held Minot State to a 42.6 percent mark from the floor, 29.4 percent mark for the 3-point line, and 66.7 percent mark from the free-throw line.
NSU led the game with 27 points off the bench, 16 points off turnovers, and 34 points in the paint. Scoring off the bench for the Wolves were Arvidson,
Bo Fries with six points,
Michael Schreiber with four points, and
Ian Smith with two points. Northern forced ten Beaver turnovers, and held two MSU starters under five points on the night.
The Wolves return to Wachs Arena tomorrow night for a 6 p.m. match-up with the University of Mary. The Marauders defeated No. 3 MSU Moorhead 77-73 on the road in Friday NSIC action. Tomorrow's game is themed Military Appreciation and all members of the military will be admitted free to the contest with valid military ID. Fans are also encouraged to bid in the silent auction of the camo themed NSU jerseys throughout the night. A table will be set up at the entrance of the arena and all proceeds will go to the Wounded Warrior Project.
