Mankato, Minn. – The Northern State women's basketball team defeated the Mankato State University Mavericks tonight 74-61 on the road. The Wolves improve to 16-4 overall and 12-3 in conference action, while the Mavericks drop to 6-13 overall and 5-10 in the NSIC.
NSU trailed early in the match-up, with their greatest deficit of 13 points coming with 6:30 remaining in the first half. The Wolves rallied before half-time to cut the MSU lead to just one point. Both teams were locked in at 50-50 heading into the fourth quarter, however, the Wolves exploded offensively for 24 points to the Maverick's eleven to seal the victory.
Junior guard,
Paige Waytashek, dominated from beyond the three-point arch in the match, sinking six three-pointers, shooting 54.5 percent from the floor and collecting a season-high 21 points.
Devon Brecke and
Lauren Deadrick also accumulating double-digit points for the Wolves, as Brecke recorded 17 points and Deadrick put up 11 total points.
As a team, Northern State outshot Mankato State 40.7 percent from field goal range and 89.5 percent from the free-throw line. The Mavericks had a slight edge from the three-point line shooting 44.0 to the Wolves' 40.9 percent.
The Wolves outrebounded their opponent for the 15
th time this season, recording 39 boards on the night.
Lauren Deadrick,
Jill Conrad and
Miranda Ristau all tallied a team-high six rebounds.
Alexis Tappe picked up five rebounds, three steals and two blocks against the Mavericks' offense. NSU logged 19 second chance points in the match.
MSU also had three starters in double-digit scoring as Sammie Delzotto notched 14 points, Britney Scherber recorded 12 points, and Claire Ziegler finished with 11 total.
The Wolves continue their weekend road series against Concordia-St. Paul tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m. from the Gangelhoff Center, with the men's game to follow.
