Full ResultsKearney, Neb. – The Northern State University wrestling team finished the day 1-3 from the Midwest Duals. The Wolves faced off against steep competition in No. 16 Western State and No. 20 University of Colorado Pueblo.
Tyler Stenberg went a perfect 4-0 on the day, while
Sean Havlovic and
Joe Gomez each were 3-1.
Western State Dual The Wolves opened the Midwest Duals against No. 16 Western State and fell 32-10.
Tyler Stenberg opened the scoring for NSU with a 7-5 decision win over Tyler Adams at 149 pounds.
Sean Havlovic followed that with a major decision victory of his own. Havlovic defeated Travis Braford 14-2 adding four points for NSU.
Junior
Joe Gomez tallied the team's final victory of the dual, defeating Mick Dougharity 9-3 at 197 pounds.
Carson Henry fell in a close battle with Zane Rich in the 133 pound match, with a 9-7 score.
University of Colorado-Pueblo Dual Northern bounced back in the second dual of the day with a 25-14 victory over
No. 20 Colorado Pueblo. The Wolves went on a three match win streak in the lower weights led off by
Carson Henry. Henry took down Ruben Lucero by fall at 1:41 in the match taking the 6-4 lead.
Matt Bettencourt lengthened the NSU lead defeating Rick Weirich in a 10-7 decision.
Tyler Stenberg was next on the ballot for NSU, taking down Dixon Richins 17-11. Northern led 12-4 through four weight classes.
Sean Havlovic picked things back up for NSU, defeating Kyle Bateman in a 12-1 major decisions.
Anthony Navarro,
David Murphy and
Joe Gomez each recorded decision victories over Larry Schmueser (9-4), Joshua Castellano (18-14), and Jakob Lund (9-2) to secure the NSU victory.
Colorado School of Mines Dual
The Wolves faced off against Colorado Mines in their third dual of the day, ultimately falling 21-18 in a hard fought match.
Carson Henry recorded his second victory by fall of the day, opening the scoring for NSU. Henry defeated Caleb Micho at 4:51 in the match.
Tyler Stenberg continued a solid day back on the mat with a 10-6 decision victory over Jacob Gerken. The trio of Havlovic, Navarro, and Murphy added three decision wins for NSU. Havlovic defeated John Crowley 5-4, while Navarro and Murphy took down Rocky Michaelson and Karl Breidenbach 6-2 and 7-2.
Adams State Dual After a long day on the mat, Northern entered their final dual of the day against Adams State. The Wolves fell to the Grizzlies 28-25.
Matt Bettencourt notched his second victory of the day to open the scoring for NSU. Bettencourt defeated Zach Mahaney in a 10-1 major decision.
Tyler Stenberg capped of his day with a victory by fall over Devin Vasquez at 3:33 in the match.
Joe Gomez added to the win column with a 3-1 decision over Joe Bencomo.
Next up for the Wolves is a pair of NSIC contests next Friday and Saturday versus Upper Iowa and St. Cloud State. NSU kicks off the weekend against the Peacocks, Friday at 7 p.m., and will face off against the Huskies at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
