Winter Park, Fla. – The Northern State University volleyball team opened the 2015 season with a two match sweep over Spring Hill College and Rollins College from the Rollins Invitational. The Wolves improve to 2-0 on the year heading into day two play Saturday.
In the opening match of the season, Northern topped Spring Hill College with set scores of 11-25, 13-25, and 11-25. The Wolves tallied 49 kills, 13 blocks, and hit .506 in the win.
Cari McGarvie led the way for NSU with 16 kills and 5 blocks. The senior hit .842 in the game and added one service ace.
Kelsey Chambers was next in line with ten kills of her own, hitting .429 in the game.
Drew Smith recorded a solid start to the year with 44 assists, seven digs, and one block. The senior setter averaged 14.7 assists per set in the win. Sophomore Many Kurosky hit an even .500, tallying nine kills in 14 attempts.
Tori Biach and
Kellie Schmitt rounded out the Northern hitters with seven kills apiece. Returning defensive players
Renee Hoffman and
Annika van Oosbree led the team with 12 and ten digs respectively.
The Wolves kept the Badgers off balance with only 22 kills and an attack percentage of .090 in the loss. Spring Hill struggled throughout unable to make a run.
Northern continued their success in game two with a three set victory over the host Rollins College. The Wolves defeated the Tars with scores of 25-16, 25-17, and 25-19. Nearly matching their kill total from the game before, NSU tallied 47 kills and hit .447.
Kelsey Chambers led the Wolves in game two with 13 kills and nine digs.
Cari McGarvie's hot hand was at it again in game two with 11 more kills and a .667 hitting percentage. McGarvie also added two blocks in the win.
Drew Smith tallied 42 assists and seven digs, bringing her day one assist average to 14.33 per set.
Leading the team in attack percentage was
Kellie Schmitt with a .800 mark and eight kills. Both
Mandy Kurosky and
Tori Biach tallied seven kills in the win.
Annika van Oosbree led the NSU defensive play with 12 digs, followed closely by
Renee Hoffman with ten of her own.
The Wolves were too much for the Tars, as Rollins College it only .198 in three sets and tallied 16 attack errors.
Northern is back in action tomorrow from Winter Park with games against Southeastern Oklahoma, at 12 p.m. central time, and Southern New Hampshire, at 4 p.m. central time.
