Volleyball Sweeps Gypsy Day Weekend, Chambers Leads NSU Offense

Aberdeen, S.D. – The No. 19 Northern State University volleyball team remains unbeaten in 2015 after a 3-0 victory over St. Cloud State. The Wolves defeated the Huskies with a set scores of 25-10, 25-17, and 25-16, notching their 13th victory of the season and fifth in league play. SCSU drops to 5-8 overall and 1-4 in the loop.
 
Northern tallied 47 kills, nearly doubling the Huskies total of 25 in the three sets. As a team the Wolves hit .324 and held their opponents to a .074 mark. The NSU defense tallied 56 digs, led by senior libero Renee Hoffman with 21 on the night. Hoffman averaged a season high seven digs per set to bring her season total to 180 digs. Defensive specialists Annika van Oosbree and Amanda Tobin added six and three digs respectively in their time on the court.
 
Drew Smith served up the NSU offense with 41 assists, marking the tenth time this season the senior has tallied over 40. Smith added a team second best nine digs, one ace, and one kill in the win. Kelsey Chambers kept the good vibes rolling in night two with a team leading 14 kills. Chambers hit .560 in the win with no attack errors. She added eight digs and two service aces as well. Cari McGarvie was close behind with 12 kills, followed by Mandy Kurosky with nine and Tori Biach with seven.
 
Kellie Schmit added four kills to the team's 47 total and hit a match leading .600. The Northern block forced 17 Huskies attack errors in the game and recorded two block assists by Cari McGarvie and Mandy Kurosky.
 
Through 13 matches of play the Wolves are hitting a league leading .379, and holding their opponents at .111 this season. Northern sits atop the NSIC in assists, 14.63 per set, opponent assists, 8.66 per set, kills, 15.44 per set, opponent kills, 8.93 per set, and opponent blocks, 1.24 per set. Kellie Schmit, Cari McGarvie, and Kelsey Chambers sit one-two-three in the league standings in attack percentage with marks of .565, .462, and .400. And finally senior setter Drew Smith leads not only the NSIC but the nation as well in assists per set with a 13.32 average.
 
NSU will be back in action next Friday and Saturday traveling to Minnesota, Crookston and Bemidji State. Game times are schedule for 7 and 5 p.m. respectively.
