Crookston, Minn. – The streak continues, as the Northern State University volleyball team defeated Minnesota, Crookston 3-0 on the road. The No. 9 Wolves improve to 14-0 overall and 6-0 in NSIC play, while the Golden Eagles drop to 6-8 on the year and 2-4 in the loop.
Set one looked as though a close match would be ahead, with an NSU victory of 25-21, however the Wolves pulled away with larger spreads in sets two (25-13) and three (25-7). Northern combined for 46 kills and hit .430 as a team in the win.
A team effort has been the story for NSU this season, with five players tallying five or more kills and eight players notching multiple digs.
Kelsey Chambers led the NSU offense with 15 kills, while hitting .480 in the match.
Tori Biach followed close behind with 12 kills of her own, and an attack percentage of .375.
Cari McGarvie and
Mandy Kurosky recorded six kills apiece, while McGarvie led the team hitting .500 on the night.
Senior setter
Drew Smith recorded 40 assists, leading the NSU offense to their 14
th victory of the season. After her second NSIC setter of the week nod, Smith boosts her season assists per set average to 13.32 after the UMC win.
Renee Hoffman and McGarvie tallied the Wolves four other assists, while Hoffman led the team with nine digs and two service aces.
Defensive specialists
Annika van Oosbree and
Amanda Tobin each tallied five digs in three sets of play, followed by Kurosky and Smith with four apiece.
Kellie Schmit notched five kills out of the middle, adding to the team total of 46.
Northern held the Golden Eagles to 23 kills and a .038 attack percentage. Crookston struggled to find the court with 20 errors on the night, hitting -.074 in the second set of play.
The Wolves will be back in action tomorrow, traveling to Bemidji State for a 5 p.m. match-up with the Beavers.
