Wolves Take Down No.1 Bulldogs in Friday Night Thriller

Aberdeen, S.D. - The Wolves had quite a challenge in Friday night NSIC action as they defended their home court against the No.1 ranked Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs. Northern was in control from the first serve of the match defeating Minnesota Duluth 3-0, improving to 12-0 overall and 4-0 in NSIC play.

NSU has also captured the league led, as the Wolves are the only unbeaten team in the Northern Sun. Duluth drops to a 10-2 overall and 3-1 in league play. The win marks the first in school history where the Wolves have defeated a team ranked No. 1 in the nation. Northern also extend their winning streak to the longest in school history with 12 wins.

The Wolves came out ready in set one of the night, handily defeating the Bulldogs 25-10. They had great serving from Tori Biach with three aces followed by Renee Hoffman with one of her own. The energy in the Barnett Center was electric, as the Wolves housed over 1,300 fans in the Top-25 battle. 

Duluth fought back in the secon and thir sets with a total of 11 ties and two lead changes.  However, NSU secured the victory taking each set with score of 25-21 and 25-22, marking the 11th time this season that the Wolves have defeated an opponent in straight sets. 

The Wolves had a total of 51 kills in the game, led by Kelsey Chambers and Cari McGarvie with 13 kills each. Close behind was Tori Biach with 11 and Mandy Kurosky with eight. Chambers lead the team hitting .647 with one service ace and six digs. McGarvie also swung .500 in the win. Drew Smith continued to add to her assist total with 47, and the senior now averages 13.29 assists per set. Renee Hoffman led the NSU defense with 13 digs, followed by Annika van Oosbree with eight of her own.
 
Northern hit .421 as a team with 51 kills, 50 assists, and 36 digs. The Wolves held the Bulldogs to a .204 attack percentage, with 16 errors.
 
The Wolves and Huskies are set to start tomorrow at 7 p.m. from Wachs Arena. Fans with a valid Gypsy Day football ticket will be admitted to the volleyball match for free.
