Wolves Outlast Dragons in Five Sets

Moorhead, Minn. – In their first three-plus match of the season, the Northern State University volleyball team defeat MSU Moorhead 3-2 on the road. The No. 19 Wolves may have dropped two sets however remain a perfect 11-0 on the year, and 3-0 in Northern Sun Conference play. The Dragons fell to 9-2 overall and 2-1 in the loop after the marathon match.
 
Just one day after being named NSIC Offensive Player of the Week Kelsey Chambers led the team with a whopping 24 kills. The senior added 12 digs, three block assists, and two assists, while hitting .353 in five sets. NSIC Setter of the Week Drew Smith continued to propel the powerful NSU offense with a season high 64 assists. Smith notched nine digs, two block assists, and one service ace in the win.
 
Northern started the match with two quick wins over the Dragons, however fell in the third and fourth sets. The Wolves pulled off the victory with 15-9 set win in the fifth and decisive set. NSU tallied a season high 70 kills and hit .259, while the Dragons tallied 55 kills and hit .169 on the night.
 
Cari McGarvie was second on the team with 17 kills, followed by Mandy Kurosky with 12 kills of her own. McGarvie tallied four of her 17 kills in the final six points played in the match. Kellie Schmit led the team hitting .429, and added eight kills and four block assists. Tori Biach tallied nine kills of her own and seven digs. Three Wolves tallied double-digit digs led by Renee Hoffman with 25 on the night for a 5.00 digs per set average. Hoffman was followed by Chambers with 12 digs and Annika van Oosbree with ten.
 
Northern returns home for two matches over the Gypsy Days weekend. The Wolves will host No. 1 Minnesota Duluth on Friday, and St. Cloud State on Saturday. Each match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. from Wachs Arena.
