Minot, N.D. – The Northern State University baseball team recorded their second straight four game series victory over Minot State in Sunday NSIC action. The Wolves fell to Minot State 1-2 in game one, and came back for the 13-3 mercy rule victory in game two. After going 3-1 on the weekend, Northern improved to 19-17 overall and 13-11 in conference games.
Game One The Wolves tallied five hits in game one off Beaver starter Zorn.
Riley Shintaffer scored Northern's lone run of the game in the top of the second inning. Shintaffer led off the inning with a double to right. Riley scored off an error by the second basemen on
Jack Schmidt's in play ball.
Colton Boucher suffered the loss in a solid outing throwing sixth innings for the Wolves. The junior gave up two earned runs and five hits, while striking out a season high nine Beaver batters.
Eric O'Bryan and
Jack Schmidt also notched doubles in the loss, while
Lucas Lorenz and
Buddy Traxler tallied singles to the left side.
Game Two NSU was out for blood in game two, looking to take the series from the Beavers. The Wolves tallied four runs in the first inning of play, and did not look back. Northern led the entirety of the game scoring runs in the third, fourth, and sixth innings of play.
Riley Shintaffer,
Alex Cornwell, and
Braden Goldade led the team with three hits apiece in the win. Golden and Cornwell tallied a team leading three RBI. All nine NSU starters recorded a multiple hit game, while
Mark Abrahamson,
Jack Schmidt, and
Alex Cornwell led the team with three runs scored.
Cody Johns earned his fourth win of the season throwing five inning for NSU. Johns struck out a season high eight batters, with one earned run and seven hits.
Marcus Manderbach entered in relief, throwing two scoreless innings.
Northern will play a road doubleheader with Minnesota State beginning at 1 p.m. on Wednesday. The Wolves then return home for five home games from Fossum Field. NSU will begin the week with a mid-week game versus in-town NAIA opponent Presentation College. Northern will then remain at home for a weekend series with Minnesota Crookston. The Wolves and Golden Eagles will face-off at 1 and 3 p.m., Saturday, and 12 and 2:30 p.m., Sunday.
