Photo Gallery Aberdeen, S.D. – Continuing their hot streak, the Northern State University softball team swept MSU Moorhead in mid-week conference action. The Wolves defeats the Dragons 6-2 in game one, and 3-2 in game two. With the game one win, Northern broke the single season wins record set back in 2012. The Wolves improve to 26-16 overall and 13-6 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play.
Game One
Down 0-1 heading into the bottom of the second, the Wolves were in need of a rally after going down in order in the first.
Macey Engel and
Rachel Albright hit back-to-back singles to lead off the inning for the Wolves.
Brittney Lash hit into a fielder's choice in the next at-bat leaving runners on first and second, for designated player
Katelynn Dilts. The sophomore singled down the left field line to load the bases for freshmen
Michaela Liebl. Liebl faced the challenge with her first career grand-slam to left centerfield. The blast cleared the on-look of fans in attendance for South Dakota's largest softball tailgate.
Northern led the entirety of the game, adding two more runs in the third. Engel and Albright started the inning yet again, with back-to-back singles to center. Lash then loaded the bases for Dilts, as she was hit by a Morgan Nybo pitch. Dilts scored Engel on a fielder's choice to the shortstop. Just one at-bat later, Liebl singled up the middle, scoring Lash for her second hit and fifth RBI of the game.
Senior
Kami Smesmo threw her 17
th win of the season in seven innings pitched. Smesmo gave up two earned runs off eight hits, while striking out nine in the game.
Game Two Northern fell behind early in game two, as the Dragons scored in the top of the second by virtue of the long ball.
Kelsey Gale matched the performance, to lead off the bottom of the third with a line drive homerun to dead center field.
The Dragons answered back in the fifth, taking the 2-1 lead off NSU started
Missy Elkins. The Wolves however would not lay down that easy in the bottom half of the inning.
Kelsey Gale connected for a one out single to left field, to get the Wolves rolling. Gale went on to steal second base, and advance to third off an error by the shortstop. Gale came around to score, alongside
Kalie Maiden who walk in the next at-bat, putting NSU up 3-2.

The Wolves had the lead, and
Kami Smesmo entered in relief for Elkins. Missy threw five innings for the Wolves giving up eight hits and two runs, while striking out four in the game. Elkins earned her eighth win of the season in the game. Smesmo then nabbed her second save of the year throwing two innings. The senior gave up one hit and struck out two in the outing.
NSU will return to Moccasin Creek this Saturday and Sunday versus Winona State and Upper Iowa University. First pitch of the doubleheaders is set for 1 p.m. each day. The Wolves will honor seniors
Kami Smesmo and
Eryn Yancy, Sunday versus the Peacocks.
