Bismarck, N.D. – The Northern State University softball team captures their 24
th victory of the season in Tuesday NSIC action. The Wolves have now tied the school record for single season wins, set back in the 2012 season, when seniors
Kami Smesmo and
Eryn Yancy were in their first season with NSU. Northern defeated University of Mary, 2-1, in the first game of the day. Game two, however was ruled a "no game" due to a campus fire evacuation at U-Mary. The two teams were evacuated safely and will not reschedule the contest.
The Wolves scored first in the third inning, and led the remaining innings of the game.
Lauren Kunz started the inning for the Wolves, reaching first by virtue of a hit by pitch. After being sacrificed to second by
Kelsey Gale, Kunz scored off a
Kalie Maiden single to left.
Northern added, what would be the game winning run, in the sixth.
Rachel Albright singled down the left field line to lead off the Wolves inning.
Mackenzie Thielen entered the game to pinch run for Albright, and advanced to second on an error by the second basemen.
Michaela Liebl singled down the right field line to load the bases for junior
Kelsey Gale. Gale drew the U-Mary walk, scoring Thielen and putting the Wolves up 2-0.
The Marauders answered back with one run in the bottom of the seventh, but were unable to tie up the game. After being named NSIC pitcher of the week,
Kami Smesmo earned her 16
th win of the season throwing a complete seven innings. Smesmo gave up one earned runs on three hits, with three strikeouts.
Northern will return home Thursday, for their rescheduled match-up with MSU Moorhead. Fans are encouraged to come out for South Dakota's Largest Softball Tailgate. The tailgate will include free hot dogs and chips for all in attendance, hosted by Northwestern Mutual. Game times are set for 2 and 4 p.m. between the Wolves and the Dragons from Moccasin Creek Complex.
