St. Paul, Minn. – With a sweep over Concordia-St. Paul, the Northern State University softball team recorded their 22
nd and 23
rd wins of the season. Northern improves to 23-16 overall and 10-6 in Northern Sun Conference games.
Game One Northern scored all eight of their runs in the top of the second inning led off by back-to-back
Rachel Albright and
Michaela Liebl homeruns.
Eryn Yancy also homered in the inning, scoring
Lauren Kunz and
Kelsey Gale who had reached base by virtue of a walk and fielder's choice.
Macey Engel and
Rachel Albright led the team with two hits apiece in the 8-0 victory. Albright tallied four RBI, while
Eryn Yancy notched three.
Kami Smesmo nabbed her 15
th win of the season in a five inning, two hit, shut-out over the Golden Bears. Smesmo tallied one strikeout and gave up one walk.
Game Two The Golden Bear offense proved to be more of a threat for the Wolves in game two, as they connected for seven hits and four earned runs off NSU starter
Missy Elkins. The Northern offense however fought back after going down 4-6 in the bottom of the second.
NSU started the game with three earned runs in the first from the one-through-five hitters in the lineup.
Kelsey Gale led-off the game for the Wolves with a walk.
Kalie Maiden and
Eryn Yancy then hit back-to-back singles to the right side.
Brittney Lash opened up the scoring for the Wolves with a double down the right field line scoring Maiden and Yancy.
Northern scored in five of the seven innings of play, with three in the first, third, and the seventh. With the Golden Bears on their heels, the Wolves secured the victory in the top of the seventh.
Lauren Kunz singled to the third basemen with one out in the inning. Kunz then came around to score, off a
Kelsey Gale blast to left.
Kalie Maiden and
Eryn Yancy combined for the Wolves final run of the game, as Maiden singled and Yancy doubled to center.
Missy Elkins threw her seventh win of the season in 4.1 innings pitched. The sophomore struck-out one and gave up seven hits.
Kami Smesmo earned the save in 2.2 innings pitched. The senior held Concordia scoreless with only three hits.
