Aberdeen, S.D.- The Northern State women's basketball team defeated the MSUM Dragons tonight 60-59, picking up their third consecutive victory from home. NSU advances to 8-3 overall and 4-2 in conference action, while Minnesota State Moorhead falls to 7-2 overall and 4-2 in the NSIC.
In the first half of play, the Wolves were down 24-31, however, 36 second half points propelled them to victory. The final decision came down to the last seconds of the game as
Devon Brecke was fouled on a shot in the paint. With 3.6 seconds left on the clock the senior stepped up to the free-throw line to shoot with the game tied at 59 all. Brecke missed the first shot, but sunk the second to lead the Wolves to victory.
Sophomore
Jill Conrad led the team offensively, recording 17 total points, notching a 63.6 field goal percentage and shooting 3-4 from three-point range.
Lauren Deadrick put up an addition 12 points and
Bethany Crosswait added 11 to the Wolves total. Crosswait, along with teammate
Alexis Tappe, each recorded a team high eight rebounds on the night.
Northern State and Minnesota State Moorhead each ended the match with 38 total team rebounds, but NSU had the advantage shooting from field goal range, finishing at the 41.1 percent mark compared to the Dragon's 35.5 percent. NSU also recorded 19 total points off of the bench in the match.
Cassidy Thorson had a team high 14 total points, four three point baskets and two steals for MSUM, however, it was not enough to overcome Northern State's aggressive second half play.
The Wolves will continue conference action on the road January 2
nd to take on Winona State at 6 p.m. and look to face Upper Iowa on January 3
rd at 4 p.m..
