Scoring SheetAberdeen, S.D. – The Northern State University wrestling team opened the 2015-16 home season with a 31-9 victory over the University of Jamestown. The Wolves won six of the eight matches wrestled, improving to 4-3 in duals this season.
Grant Steen opened the dual with an exhibition match-up against Justin Folsom of the Jimmies. Steen broke out to an early 4-1 lead in the first period with over two minutes of riding time. Grant added another two points, via takedown in the second period and finished with a 6-2 lead.
Ben Cauffman tallied six points to open the dual for the Wolves at 125 pounds, as the Jimmies were open.
Carson Henry opened the 133 match with a quick takedown and four point nearfall. The senior took a 5-0 lead just 15 seconds into the first period. Henry led 12-2 after the first period. Midway through the second period, Henry pinned Phillip Johnson at 4:43 in the match, earning six points for the Wolves and Northern took the 12-0 lead.
Blake Perryman took a 6-0 lead to open the 157 pound match, taking down Zachary Pickering and earning the four point nearfall. Pickering fought back with a couple escapes, however Perryman was able to garner two more points to round out the period. After the first period, Perryman led 8-2. Pickering added one more point in the second, cutting into the Perryman led by five. Perryman came out to score in the third period, ultimately taking the match 12-6. Through four matches the Wolves led 15-6.
Sean Havlovic scored first in the 165 pound match, taking down Jacob Paul in the second minute of action. Havlovic finished the period with a 5-0 lead. The junior continued to build his lead in the second period tallying another five points, and finishing the period with a score of 10-1. Havlovic finished off Paul in the third with four more points, for the 14-1 major decision victory. Northern took the 19-6 lead heading into the 174 pound match.
Anthony Navarro opened the 174 pound match, with a takedown and two point nearfall over Christopher Love. He took the early 4-0 lead heading into the second period. Navarro added a pair of takedowns and a four point nearfall in the second period. He ultimately defeated Love by fall at 6:08 in the match, increasing the NSU lead to 25-6.
Joe Gomez rounded things out for the Wolves in the 285 pound match against Zach Wardle. Gomez tallied a takedown in the opening period, battling Wardle. The junior added an escape, takedown, and four point nearfall in the second period, to take the 9-0 lead. Gomez pinned Wardle with under a minute remaining in the period, taking the victory by fall at 4:28 in the match.
Northern will be back in action after the holiday break at Augustana University. The dual is slated to start at 7 p.m. on January 8
th.
