Aberdeen, S.D. – The Northern State University men's basketball team bounced back with an 88-81 victory over St. Cloud State at home on Saturday. The Wolves improved to 6-5 overall and 2-3 in Northern Sun action.
Darin Peterka led the Wolves for the second straight night with a career high 30 points. Peterka shot 11-of-15 from the floor and 5-of-7 from three point range, while adding nine rebounds, three assists, and one steal. The junior finishes the weekend with 54 points and 19 rebounds.
Carter Evans notched a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds, while
Michael Schreiber was the final Wolf in double-digits with ten points in the win.
The Wolves trailed the Huskies 44-39 at the half, and fought back to gain the lead just five minutes into the second half of play. The two teams battled back and forth in the final minutes of play, however Northern never gave up the lead. The largest lead of the game for NSU, which was 12 points, came with just five minutes remaining in regulation.
Carter Evans battled for the Wolves with 12 points of his own in the second half, shooting 5-of-6 from the floor and 2-of-2 from the foul line. The Huskies sent the Wolves to the foul line in the final minutes of play, looking to chip away at the NSU lead, however the Wolves sealed the deal going 6-of-6 in the final minutes of play.
DJ Pollard tallied nine points, while
Bo Fries notched eight in his first start of the season. The pair tallied two rebounds apiece in the win.
Skye Warwick notched seven points and
Mack Arvidson added five off the bench. Also scoring in the game were
Spencer Pankonin with three and
Ian Smith with two. Smith also recorded five rebounds and a team high four assists.
Northern shot 50.9 percent from the floor, 39.1 percent from 3-point range, and 70.0 percent from the foul line in the win, while the Huskies shot 45.6 percent from the floor, 41.7 percent from 3-point range, and 75.0 percent from the foul line. As a unit, the Wolves recorded 36 points in the paint, 20 points off the bench, 15 second chance points, and ten points off turnovers.
The NSU men look to continue their strong momentum as they host No. 4 MSU Moorhead next Saturday from Wachs Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. following the NSU women's game at 4 p.m.
