Aberdeen, S.D.- In their first home conference match-up of the 2015-16 season, the Northern State University women's basketball team defeated the University of Minnesota Duluth by a final score of 71-62. The Wolves advance to 6-3 overall and 2-2 in NSIC play, while the Bulldogs fall to 2-5 overall and 2-2 in the conference.
The two teams battled in the first half of the contest while entering the third quarter with NSU up 33-27. The Wolves exploded for 26 points in the third quarter, and kept the lead for the remainder of the match-up.
Northern State had three players nab double-digit points on the night as
Devon Brecke recorded a team high 20 points,
Paige Waytashek picked up a season high 18 points and
Lauren Deadrick followed up with 13 total. The team compiled 38 total points from the paint, and went an impressive 19-21 from the free throw line.
Senior
Lauren Deadrick recorded 11 rebounds on the night, improving her rebounds per game to a team high 9.3. Deadrick was also aggressive defensively, blocking four shots and scrambling for two steals. As a team, NSU tallied 19 points off turnovers in the match.
Minnesota Duluth's Samantha Kozlowski recorded 17 points and went 50.0 percent from three-point range. UMD logged an overall 39.3 field goal percentage and shot 35.3 percent from three-point range, but were unable to come up with enough second half points for the victory.
The Northern State women's basketball team will return to Wachs Arena tomorrow night at 4 p.m. to face St. Cloud State University.
