Aberdeen, S.D. - In a close one at home, the Northern State University men's basketball team fell to Minnesota Duluth 85-72. The Wolves drop to 5-5 overall and 1-3 in the league, while the Bulldogs improve to 7-2 on the year and 4-0 in the Northern Sun.
Darin Peterka led the NSU attack with a career high 24 points. The junior added a season high ten rebounds for his first double-double of the year, alongside two assists and three steals.
Skye Warwick added 19 points and was the only other wolf in double-digit scoring. The senior reach 970 points in his career in the game, as he makes his way into the NSU 1,000 point club.
Northern led 38-35 at the half, however the Wolves lead slipped away as Minnesota Duluth fought back with 50 points in the second half of play. UMD shot 54.6 percent in the final 20 minutes of play, and held the Wolves to a 38.7 mark. NSU gave up 20 Bulldog points off 11 turnovers.
The NSU bench tallied 37 points, in large part by Peterka. Northern out-rebounded the Bulldogs on the offensive boards with 13 on the night resulting in eight second chance points. The Wolves also tallied a game leading 30 points in the paint. UMD led the game from the foul line shooting 86.2 percent and 90.9 percent in the second half, while the Wolves shot 53.8 percent as team.
DJ Pollard tallied eight points and two rebounds, while
Ian Smith added six points and one board.
Mack Arvidson and
Bo Fries tallied five points apiece, and the NSU big men
Carter Evans and
Michael Schreiber notched three and two points respectively.
As a unit the Wolves shot 41.7 percent from the floor, led by
Darin Peterka shooting 52.6 percent and
Skye Warwick shooting 45.4 percent. Warwick went 4-of-9 from the arch and 5-of-7 from the foul line. Northern's largest lead of the game, seven points, came just three minutes into the second half of play and the Bulldogs chipped away from there.
The men will be back in action tomorrow night from Wachs Arena, for a 6 p.m. match-up with St. Cloud State.
