Marshall, Minn. – In their first overtime match-up of the season, the Northern State University men's basketball team fell to Southwest Minnesota State 111-105 in non-conference action. The Wolves drop to 1-2 on the year heading into the NSIC opener next week.
Spencer Pankonin led the team with a career high 26 points in the game. Pankonin shot 7-of-10 from the floor, 6-of-8 from the 3-point line, and 6-of-6 from the foul line. He also added three rebounds and three assists.
All five NSU starters recorded double-digit points in the match-up.
Skye Warwick,
Justin Decker and
Darin Peterka tallied 16, 15, and 14 points respectively.
DJ Pollard led the Wolves with nine rebounds and rounded out the double-digit scorers with ten points.
The NSU bench combined for 24 points, led by
Mack Arvidson with seven and
Michael Schreiber with six.
Ian Smith and
Carter Evans notched four points apiece, while
Bo Fries tallied three.
The two team's entered the locker room with the Wolves up 47-46 and battled back and forth throughout the second half of play. SMSU tied the game with nine seconds left to play, and the Wolves were unable to record the game winner in their final possession.
The Wolves shot 53.0 percent from the floor, 50.0 percent from the arch, and 78.6 percent from the free-throw line in the game. The Mustangs recorded 18 points off of 14 NSU turnovers in the match, while the Wolves notched 14 off ten SMSU turnovers. Northern recorded 38 points in the paint and 15 fast break scores in the game.
Northern will be back in action Tuesday at MSU Moorhead for the NSIC opener beginning at 8 p.m.. NSU will then return home for a pair of Thanksgiving match-ups with Presentation College and Chadron State on Friday and Saturday from Wachs Arena.
