Spearfish, S.D.- The Northern State University women's basketball team defeated Black Hills State University 52-49 in their third non-conference match-up of the season. The Wolves improve to 2-1 on the season and the Yellow Jackets fall to 2-1.
The two teams battled throughout each of the four quarters, with largest lead being an eight point spread by Black Hills State. Northern State found themselves in a close two point game with 31 seconds left in the fourth quarter, but
Devon Brecke secured the game by making a free throw with five seconds remaining to mark the final score, 52-49 in favor of the Wolves.
NSU sophomore
Jill Conrad put up 21 points for the Wolves in the contest in just her third career start. Conrad connected for a 62.5 field goal percentage, went 11-11 from the free throw line and came away with 10 rebounds on the night.
Paige Waytashek, making her first appearance of the 2015-16 season, also led offensively with seven points, followed by
Lauren Deadrick with six points.
Bethany Crosswait nabbed seven rebounds for the Wolves, while recording a field goal percentage of 66.7% in the match.
Black Hills State shot 30.2 percent from the field compared to Northern State's 27.1 percent, however the Wolves had 19 more rebounds, picking up 16 second chance points to the Yellow Jacket's two second chance points.
The Northern State women's basketball will return to action this weekend from the Colorado Springs Tournament. The Wolves will take on Metro State at 5:30 p.m. on Friday and the University of Colorado- Colorado Springs at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.
