Fayette, Iowa – The Northern State University volleyball team began week six of NSIC action with a 3-1 win over Upper Iowa. The No. 8 Wolves took down the Peacocks with set scores of 25-18, 17-25, 25-10, and 25-14. Northern improves to 16-0 overall and 8-0 in league action, while Upper Iowa falls to 8-9 on the year and 2-6 in the NSIC.
Mandy Kurosky had arguably her strongest statistical match this season, with a team leading 15 kills and .556 attack percentage. The sophomore recorded zero errors in her 27 swings on the night and added eight digs, two blocks, and one service ace. Matching Kurosky's total for the night was
Kelsey Chambers with 15 kills of her own. Chambers added three blocks and nine digs in four sets played.
Also in double-digit kills for the Wolves were
Tori Biach with 14 and
Cari McGarvie with ten. The duo hit .314 and .350 respectively, while McGarvie led the team with four blocks. Senior setter
Drew Smith tallied her third double-double of 2015 with a team leading 14 digs and 56 assists. Smith averaged 14 assists per set, and added two kills, one block, and one ace for the Wolves.
Annika van Oosbree was second on the team with 12 digs, while
Renee Hoffman was close behind with 11 of her own. Rounding out the defensive effort for the Wolves was
Amanda Tobin with nine digs and
Tori Biach with eight.
The Wolves hit .379 as a team with 64 kills and only 11 errors. The Peacocks fought back in set two after tallying a match high six errors in the first set. UIU hit .433 with 14 kills in the second set, however the wheels came off just one set later as NSU hit a match high .516 and held Upper Iowa to a .000 mark in the third frame. Northern closed out the win with a match high 19 kills in the fourth and final set of the match, defeating the Peacocks 25-14.
Up next for the women is their third top-25 match of 2015 as they face off against the No. 24 Winona State Warriors. First serve is schedule for 4 p.m. between the two teams.
