Winona, Minn. – Saturday NSIC play, faced off the No. 8 Northern State Wolves against the No. 24 Winona State Warriors in top-25 action. The Wolves topped the Warriors 3-1 in four sets with scores of 25-20, 25-23, 19-25, and 25-23. Northern improves to 17-0 overall and 9-0 in league action, while the Warriors slide to 9-7 on the year and 3-6 in conference play. With the 3-1 loss of No. 7 Alaska Anchorage on Thursday, the Wolves remain as the lone unbeaten team in the AVCA Top-25 Poll.
It was a team effort for the Wolves in night two of the weekend, with three players tallying double-digit kills.
Kelsey Chambers led the team with 19 kills and 15 digs, for her fourth double-double this season. Chambers hit .310 in the win, and added one assist.
After a monstrous night against the Peacocks,
Mandy Kurosky added 13 kills and hit .278 versus the Warriors.
Kellie Schmit was third on the team with a season career high 11 kills and a team leading .526 attack percentage.
Cari McGarvie and
Tori Biach combined for the team's final kills of the night with nine and eight respectively.
Northern hit .303 as a unit with 60 kills, paced by senior
Drew Smith with 57 assists. Smith added one ace, one block, and eight digs in her four sets of work.
Renee Hoffman was solid on defense yet again for NSU tallying 12 digs, followed by
Amanda Tobin with nine and
Annika van Oosbree with eight.
It was a well fought match on both sides, as NSU hit only .002 better than Winona State. WSU was led by Taylor Goar and Lauren Kudronowicz with 22 and 17 kills apiece. The Wolves however tallied 14 errors to Winona's 17, and rallied back from a 19-16 deficit late in the fourth set.
NSU returns home next weekend as they host No. 3 Concordia-St. Paul and Minnesota State (RV). The Wolves and Golden Bears with match-up Friday at 7 p.m. from Wachs Arena. The Mavericks then come to town 4 p.m., Saturday. Northern will also host NSIC travel partner MSU Moorhead Tuesday the 20
th at 7 p.m.
