Aberdeen, S.D.- The women's soccer team battled against No. 13 Minnesota State this afternoon from Jerde Field. After putting up a tough fight, the game resulted in loss for the Wolves in the 5-1 finish. Northern State drops back to 4-5-1 overall and 2-4-1 in the NSIC. Keeping possession of their first place spot in the NSIC, the Minnesota State Mavericks advance to 9-1 and an undefeated 7-0 in conference play.
No. 13 Minnesota State had an explosive offense just moments after kickoff as they started the game ahead 2-0 in the first four minutes. Senior Korey Kronforst notched both early goals into the back of the net for the Mavericks. Minnesota State took offensive control once again in the 22
nd minute as Kiana Nickel rebounded her own shot and knocked it in to make it a 3-0 match.
Heading into the second half the Wolves were being outshot 22-4, but senior defender
Amelia Taylor continued to apply pressure to the Minnesota State offense. The Mavericks added two more goals in the 54
th and 67
th minutes of the game. Down 0-5, the Wolves remained aggressive. In the 69
th minute of action, midfielder
Anna Bondy connected for a goal as she drilled a free kick past the Maverick's goalkeeper, a result of one of Minnesota State's 11 fouls in the game.
Bondy had four shots for the Wolves, three of which were on target. Senior goalkeeper,
Brittany Tietz was busy on the day as she faced 41 shots, and defended 11 corner kicks from the Mavericks. Tietz recorded 16 saves in her sixth start of the season.
Northern State soccer hits the road once again to match up against Upper Iowa at 11 a.m. on Saturday and Winona State at 1 p.m. next Sunday.
