Wolves Answer Back and Defeat No. 20 Augustana 3-0

Aberdeen, S.D.- The Northern State volleyball team defeated their fourth Top-25 ranked team of the 2015 season tonight from Wachs Arena, handling Augustana University 3-0. The No. 2 Wolves improve to 22-2 overall and 14-2 in NSIC, while the Vikings drop to 16-8 overall and 9-7 in the conference.
 
The Wolves got an early jump in set one, defeating Augustana 25-16. Set two was a battle between the two top teams, but resulted in Northern State's favor with a score of 25-23. In the third and final set, the Vikings took an aggressive 5-0 lead, but the Wolves would ultimately make the comeback to end the set 25-19.
 
Kelsey Chambers led the Wolves attack with 20 kills, followed by Cari McGarvie with 11, Tori Biach with eight and Mandy Kurosky with seven. McGarvie also recorded an attack percentage of .526. Renee Hoffman led NSU in digs, with 14 in the match. Amanda Tobin added 10 digs to the cause, and Annika van Oosbree, Tori Biach and Drew Smith each tallied five digs a piece for the Wolves.
 
Drew Smith collected 50 assists to add to her career assist record for Northern State. Sophomore Kellie Schmit was solid defensively against the Vikings, with four blocks in the three sets.
 
Northern recorded ten more kills than the visiting Vikings, and tallied only ten attack errors in the win. NSU also led the game with 51 digs and three service aces.
 
The Northern State volleyball team will continue NSIC competition next weekend from home against Bemidji State and Minnesota Crookston. Friday night's game against Bemidji State is scheduled for 7 p.m. from Aberdeen Central High School. The team will return to Wachs Arena on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. to face Minnesota Crookston.
