Photo GalleryAberdeen, S.D. – For the second time this season, the Northern State University volleyball team defeated the No. 1 ranked team in the nation. The No. 6 Wolves were victorious against Concordia-St. Paul 3-1 from Wachs Arena, with set scores of 25-15, 25-17, 23-25, and 25-16. Northern improves to 18-0 overall and 10-0 in league play, retaining the top spot in the NSIC. The Golden Bears slide to 14-4 on the year, and 8-2 in the conference.
Northern used the home court advantage, as NSU fans packed into Wachs Arena by the thousands. The Wolves tallied 59 team kills and hit .259 to the Golden Bears 49 kills and .136 attack percentage. NSU led the match with six service aces, and ultimately took the match on
Mandy Kurosky's third of the night. Kurosky recorded match point for the Wolves and was second on the team with 15 kills. Concordia-St. Paul previously had held a 27 game win streak against the Wolves.
Cari McGarvie led the team offensively with 19 kills, and tallied a match leading .500 attack percentage. The senior added six digs, two blocks, and one ace.
Kelsey Chambers notched a double-double with a team second best 16 digs and 12 kills.
Renee Hoffman shocked the Golden Bear offense with a season second best 24 digs. Hoffman added three assists and two service aces in the win.
Tori Biach added nine kills, while
Kellie Schmit followed with four.
Senior
Drew Smith was a threat on both sides of the ball tallying 51 assists and ten digs. Smith added two blocks, while averaging 12.75 assists per set. All nine Wolves that stepped on the court recorded a dig in the win. Defensive specialists
Annika van Oosbree and
Amanda Tobin recorded nine a piece, while
Tori Biach and Kurosky each notched eight for a team season high of 91.
The Golden Bears struggled to get things going offensively as they tallied 25 team attack errors, led by Ann Schlaak with eight. No. 1 Concordia hit a season low .136 in the loss and tallied six serve receive errors.
Northern will face a solid opponent tomorrow night in Minnesota State Mankato. The Wolves and Mavericks will face off at 4 p.m. from Wachs Arena.
