Winona, Minn.- The Northern State soccer team dropped a close 2-1 match this afternoon versus the Winona State Warriors on a rare 80 degree October day from Altra Federal Credit Union Stadium. The Wolves' overall record falls to 4-7-1 and 2-6-1 in NSIC play, while the Warriors progress to 9-3-0 overall and 6-3-0 in the conference. Winona State is now in fourth in NSIC standings, behind Augustana University, Minnesota State and Minot State.
The Warriors got the ball rolling early in the 4th minute of play as their leading scorer, Abby Bohanski, placed a header into the left side of the net. The goal accounted for Bohanski's seventh of the season. Taking control of possessions, the Warriors added a second goal just 13 minutes later.
Down 0-2 in the first period, the Wolves looked to strike a comeback. In the 36th minute of action, a
Sydney Shintaffer free kick snuck through a group of WSU players into perfect position for
Anna Bondy to tap the ball high into the net resulting in the first Northern State goal of the game. Bondy now leads the Wolves with six goals on the season.
With a scoreless second half from both teams, the game ended with a final score of 2-1.
Allie Macdonald recorded three shots in the match for the Wolves,
Sydney Shintaffer was not far behind with two, and
Anna Bondy and
Andrea Boisner each recorded one a piece. Goalkeeper,
Brittany Tietz notched six saves and faced seven corner kicks against the Warriors.
Northern State soccer returns home to Jerde Field next weekend to take on Bemidji State University and Minnesota Crookston. The Wolves will face Bemidji State at 1 p.m. on Saturday and Crookston at 1 p.m. Sunday.
