Photo GalleryTerez VanPelt hit a jumper with 4.2 seconds left in overtime as Concordia-St. Paul defeated the Northern State men's basketball team 66-65 Saturday night in Wachs Arena. The loss drops Northern to 18-4 on the season and 12-4 in NSIC play.
The Golden Bears (14-7, 10-5 NSIC) were able to hit the game-winner after Cole Olstad grabbed an offensive rebound after missing a pair of free throws with just 21 seconds left to play. VanPelt was also able to tie the game in regulation with 25 seconds left with two free throws.
Mitch White and
Darin Peterka each missed shots in the waning seconds of the game and the game was sent to overtime. The loss drops the Wolves to 2-1 this season in overtime games.
NSU was able to control most of the game, but at the end of both halves, the Golden Bears finished strongly. The Wolves led by as many as eight, 16-8 with 11:38 left in the first half before CU ended on a 17-9 run and took the game into the break tied at 25-25. The second half was much of the same and Northern was in the lead for much of the second and led by as many as eight on two separate occasions. However, again Concordia would finish the half strong and led 51-48 with 1:45 left to play. A
Skye Warwick three-pointer tied the game at 51-51 and the two teams traded free throws before going to overtime tied at 54 apiece.
Warwick led the Wolves with 14 points in the loss and hit four three pointers.
Tydan Storrusten added 13 points and Peterka chipped in with seven points and a pair of steals. White grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds in the contest and
Justin Decker provided a nice spark off the bench for the Wolves, scoring six and grabbing five boards.
The second-ranked scoring defense in the league held the Wolves 12 points below their season average despite the extra period. The Wolves also shot just 36.8 percent from the floor in the loss and went 8-for-21 (38 percent) from three-point range. The Golden Bears shot 43 percent for the game and hit 7-of-17 (41.2 percent) from deep. CU also went 17-for-28 (60.7 percent) at the line while Northern was 15-of-22 (68.2).
The Wolves controlled the glass, out-rebounding Concordia 44-33 and had a 13-9 edge on second-chance points. NSU also had a 24-16 advantage in points in the paint and outscored the Golden Bears reserves 24-19. CU scored 20 points off 16 turnovers while Northern scored 17 off of 14 turnovers.
Northern returns to the road next weekend as it travels to face Augustana at 8 p.m. Friday and Wayne State Saturday at 6 p.m.
