Photo Gallery Aberdeen, S.D. – The No. 17 Northern State University women's basketball held on for the 85-80 victory of Minnesota State, Mankato. The Wolves improve to 18-3 overall and 12-3 in Northern Sun conference play, snapping the three game Maverick win streak.
It was another career night for the Wolves, as
Devon Brecke recorded 30 points in the Northern win. Brecke added a career high six rebounds, leading NSU in the game. She went 13-for-13 from the foul line and 7-for-12 from the floor to lead Northern to a 95.8 shooting percentage from the line and 56.9 percentage from the floor.
Rachel Krogman added 22 points, four rebounds, two assists, two steals, and one block. Krogman went 6-for-7 from the line and 8-for-11 from field goal range.
Megan Mutchler and
Sadie Stotesbery each recorded double-digit points in the game with ten and 14 respectively. Stotesbery led the team with 12 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.
Kara Hofschild notched a season high nine points, while adding four assists and one block.
The Wolves shot 65.4 percent from the floor in the first half, heading to the locker room with a 43-31 lead. Brecke tallied 16 of the team's 43 points in the half. Although the Wolves were out-rebounded 31-28 in the game, Northern compiled 30 points in the paint and 23 defensive boards.
The Mavericks edge their way back into the game, cutting the Wolves 14 points lead down in the final minutes of play. Six made free-throws by Brecke and two by Krogman made the game for the Wolves, as Minnesota State connected for 17 points in the final two and a half minutes of the game.
NSU returns to Wachs Arena, Saturday to face the Golden Bears on Concordia-St. Paul. Game time is set for 5 p.m. between the two teams.
