The Northern State men's basketball team made it a weekend sweep Saturday night as a strong second half propelled the Wolves to a 65-54 over Sioux Falls. NSU outscored the Cougars 33-23 in the second half of the contest after leading by just one, 32-31 at halftime.
Seth Bachand led the Wolves (15-3, 9-3 NSIC) with 20 points and nine rebounds in the victory, going 7-of-9 from the floor and adding a block and a steal.
Tydan Storrusten added 10 points, eight boards and three assists while
Darin Peterka and
Skye Warwick each chipped in with nine points.
Mitch White added five points and a game-high five helpers on the night.
NSU shot 45 percent (22-of-49) from the field while USF (7-11, 4-8 NSIC) shot 41 percent (18-for-44). The Cougars made eight three-pointers in the contest while Northern made six, but the Wolves held a 15 to 10 edge in made free throws.
Northern held a big, 35-23 edge in the rebounding battle and outscored the Cougars 10-3 in second-chance points. The Wolves also held a 28-16 advantage in paint points and the bench also held a 17-9 edge in scoring over USF. The Wolves scored 13 points off 16 Sioux Falls turnovers while USF had 14 on 15 Northern miscues.
After a close, back-and-forth battle in the first half, Northern came out strongly in the second, scoring the first six points of the second stanza. Leading 49-45 with 7:25 left to go in the game, the Wolves began to lengthen their lead, going on a 10-0 run and taking a 59-45 lead with under three minutes left to play. Northern's biggest lead of the game was 16 at 62-46 with under 2:30 left.
The Wolves now return home for four consecutive games beginning next weekend as Bemidji State comes to town for an 8 p.m. contest Friday and Bemidji State comes to Wachs for a 7 p.m. tip Saturday.
