Bismarck, N.D. – Starting the game on a 15-0 run, the no. 6 Northern State University women's basketball team defeated University of Mary 73-56. The Wolves improve to 15-1 overall and 9-1 in the conference, holding off a powerful lone ball Marauder offensive which tallied 13 treys in the game.
Rachel Krogman led the NSU offense with 17 points and 15 rebounds, followed by
Sadie Stotesbery with 16 points and eight rebounds. Stotesbery led the team from the floor, shooting 60.0 percent in her 37 minutes of play.
Megan Mutchler was the final Wolf in double-digit scoring with 15 points in the game. Mutchler led the Wolves with two blocks.
The Marauders fought back early, after going down 15-0 in the first minutes of play, with nine three-point baskets in the first half. U-Mary tied the game at 21 all, recording only one two points basket along with their nine three-pointers. The Wolves broke open the tie, finishing the first half up 31-27. U-Mary recorded only 10 points off jumpers, to their 36 points from the long ball. Northern attempted five three's in the game, and was unable to come away with a long ball connection.
The NSU defense kept the Marauders at bay, leading throughout the second half. Northern's largest lead of 19, came with five minutes remaining in the game. The Wolves out-rebounded the Marauders by nearly double, at 47-24, in the game. Defensively the Wolves forced 12 turnovers for 19 team scores.
Devon Brecke added nine points and three assists, while
Paige Waytashek notched four points, two assists, and one steal. Stotesbery and Krogman matched Brecke's total of three assists in the game, while each recorded one steal. An always spark off the bench,
Kara Hofschild added six points and four rebounds.
Sami Smith,
Alexis Tappe, and
Bethany Crosswait each scored two points in the game.
Offensively Northern shot 45.2 percent from the floor and 85.0 percent from the free-throw line. Defensively the Wolves held the Marauders to a shooting percentage of 34.6 percent from the floor, however had difficulty shutting down the U-Mary long ball at 48.1 percent.
A 42 point, 50.0 percent shooting, second half was all the Wolves needed to secure the 73-56 victory. The Wolves also tallied 30 points in the paint, bringing their season average to 28 points in the paint per game.
Northern will remain on the road next weekend traveling to Southwest Minnesota State and University of Sioux Falls. NSU will match-up with SMSU, Friday at 6 p.m., and USF, Saturday at 4 p.m., with the men to follow each day.
