Wolves Fall to Mustangs on the Road

Box Score Marshall, Minn. – The no. 4 Northern State University women's basketball team suffered only their second loss of the season in Friday NSIC basketball play. After starting the game on a 10-0 run, the Wolves fell to Southwest Minnesota State with a score of 53-52 on the road. Northern drops to 15-2 overall and 9-2 in the league, while the Mustangs tally their second win of the season.
 
After gaining the lead, Northern fell behind mid-way through the first half of play. The two teams headed to the locker with NSU down 26-27 after the first 20 minutes of play. The Wolves out-shot the Mustangs 41.4% to 31.6% in the half, however were unable to come away with the lead. SMSU continued to stay on top at the start of half number two and held the lead throughout. NSU threatened with under ten minutes to play, and had the ball with only seconds left in the game down by one. Devon Brecke was unable to come away with the bucket and Northern fell in the game.
 
Rachel Krogman led the Wolves with 16 points and nine rebounds, followed by Paige Waytashek with 13 points and two rebounds. Sadie Stotesbery was the final Wolf in double-digit scoring with ten points and eight rebounds. Devon Brecke added nine points, while Megan Mutchler tallied four in the game. Northern's 52 points came off the backs of the NSU starters, with no bench players recording a point. The opposing Mustangs notched 18 bench points in the win.
 
Northern shot 38.2 percent from the floor in the game, and for only the second time this season was out-rebounded 39-36. A total of 16 Northern turnovers resulted in 14 SMSU scores. NSU scored 36 points in the paint and 12 points off offensive rebounds, however it was not enough to secure the game.
 
The Wolves will be back in action tomorrow from Sioux Falls, SD as they take on University of Sioux Falls. Northern will look to bounce back in the 4 p.m. match-up with the Cougars.
