Soccer Opens 2014 Season at Home This Weekend

Aberdeen, S.D. - The Northern State University soccer team will begin the 2014 season at home this Friday and Sunday. The Wolves will kick off the year taking on Northwest Missouri State, Friday at 5 p.m. from Jerde Field. NSU will then take on Washburn University with a 1 p.m. start time Sunday from Jerde Field.

The Wolves Soccer program looks to improve upon their 2013 campaign where they ended the season with a record of 8-8-2 overall. NSU finished tenth a season ago with a conference record of 5-8-2. The Wolves were picked tenth in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Pre-Season Coaches Poll.
 
NSU returns 17 athletes from the 2013 squad including: Brittany Tietz, Steph Sharp, Amber Wanous, Shaina Stein, Andrea Boisner, Kay Hernandez, Anna Bondy, Mara Lopez, Shayli Kirsch, Allie Macdonald, Alyssa Wilde, Amelia Taylor, Anna Woern, Bobbye Pendleton, Anastasia Alhamra, Stephanie Carrillo, and Kourtney Woracek. The Wolves add eight freshman in: Justine Charles, Paige Sommers, Tessa Lander, Kartina Hersch, Alison Byrd, Camilla Johansson, Darian Leschewski, and Sydney Carda.
 
Allie Macdonald was selected as NSU's Offensive Player to Watch in the poll while Amber Wanous was tabbed as the Defensive Player to Watch. Macdonald led the Wolves in goals (6), points (13), shots (46) and shots on goal (24) in 2013. Her three game-winning goals also led Northern and she was one of six players to start in all 18 matches in 2013. Wanous was an Honorable Mention All-NSIC selection last season and played a total of 1,714 minutes from her midfield position.
 
About Northwest Missouri State
 
Friday's game marks the season opener for the Bearcats as they travel to Aberdeen for a non-conference match-up. A season ago, Northwest finished with a record of 5-11-2. NWMSU adds six to the 2014 squad and are slotted to finish 11th in the MIAA preseason coaches' poll.
 
A Season Ago
 
The Wolves took the 2013 contest from the Bearcats with a score of 2-0 from Maryville. Allie Macdonald and Alyssa Wilde were the goal scorers for Northern in the win. Brittany Tietz recorded her second shut-out of the season for the Wolves connecting for five saves in 90 minutes of play. All three of the Wolves shots in the game, came against goal with two hitting net.
 
About Washburn University
 
The Ichabods will have one of their largest senior classes in the program's history as nine Washburn student-athletes will play their final season in the blue and white. Despite losing nine seniors and returning a roster for the 2014 season of 23 underclassmen, the Ichabods are looking to build on last season's run to the MIAA Tournament semifinals improving on its nine-win season in 2013. Washburn is coming off a 9-9-2 season in 2013 after reaching the semifinals of the MIAA postseason tournament. The Ichabods were picked fifth in the MIAA preseason coaches' poll.
 
A Season Ago
 
Northern opened the 2013 season with a 1-0 win over the Ichabods on the road. Freshman Anna Bondy recorded the first and only goal of the game for the Wolves. Bondy led the NSU attack throughout the game taking three shots and two shots on goal, followed closely by Hernandez with two shots and one shot on goal. Pendleton also recorded her first career shot with 13 minutes to go in the game. A total of 19 players took the field for the Wolves in the season opener. Tietz racked up seven saves in the game.
