Photo GalleryThe Northern State football team rushed for a season-high 231 yards on 35 carries (6.6 avg.) but it was not enough as the Wolves fell to in-state rival Augustana Saturday night at Swisher Field, 48-17.
The big difference in the ball game came after NSU (1-2) cut the Vikings' lead to 10-7 late in the second quarter on a Nick Truen 13-yard touchdown run, when AC (2-1) scored 21 points in the final 2:40 of the first half and lengthened its lead to 31-7 heading into the break.
Augustana quarterback Trey Heid passed for 311 yards and four touchdowns as the Vikings totaled 511 yards of offense in the contest. Northern put up 350 yards of total offense and its 231 yards rushing were the most since Gypsy Days last season.
After Northern responded in the second half and cut the AC lead down to 31-14, the Vikings again responded with a 79-yard touchdown run from Dajon Newell to lengthen its lead back up to 38-14. AC also got another score after a Northern fumble late in the third quarter to make it 45-17.
Truen led the Wolves with a career-high 122 yards rushing and the one score. While
Jared Jacobson added 51 yards on the ground with a touchdown and Steven Erlandson added 44 yards rushing. Jacobson also went 15-of-31 through the air for 94 yards and was picked-off once.
Jared Hannigan threw for 25 yards in relief.
Defensively, the Wolves were led by
Andrew Bell's seven tackles.
Blaine Schmidt added six stops and
Devin Olson had five in the loss.
Blake Lohr and
Tanner Lopez each recorded sacks for NSU while
Michael Alberts and
Scot Taggart both had a half a sack.
Next week, Northern travels to Southwest Minnesota State for a 6 p.m. contest in Marshall, Minn. It will be the Wolves' final night game of the year.
