Photo GalleryAberdeen, S.D. – Playing from the confines of Swisher Field, the Northern State University softball team suffered two losses to Concordia-St. Paul in Saturday NSIC play. The 1-3 and 1-3 losses put the Wolves ate 8-16 overall and 1-7 in the league. Northern is currently on a seven game loss streak and looks to snap that number tomorrow.
Game One The two teams were scoreless through five innings of play before the Golden Bears struck first in the top of the sixth inning. Concordia scored three earned runs of NSU start
Kami Smesmo. Smesmo suffered the loss while striking out six in the game and giving up only six hits.
Rachel Albright answered back for the Wolves in the bottom of the inning with a record breaking solo shot to left field. Albright's home run notched seven on the year breaking the previous single season record of six set back in 1985.
Second basemen
Kelsey Gale was 2-4 from the plate with both a single and double to right center field.
Eryn Yancy and
Macey Engel each added two hits apiece in the game, while
Lauren Kunz and
Katelynn Dilts notched singles in the loss.
Game Two Northern led the game 2-1 heading into the sixth inning of play before the Golden Bears added two.
Missy Elkins gave up two earned runs while striking out six CU players.
Kami Smesmo entered in relief however was unable to hold off the game maker for the Golden Bears.
Eryn Yancy led off the bottom of the second with a single up the middle to start the Wolves rally.
Macey Engel then doubled the left field, leaving two runners on base for Kunz. Kunz hard hit ground ball forced an error by the short stop resulting in two NSU runs.
Kelsey Gale was again 2-4 from the plate, but with two singles to the left side of the field.
Katelynn Dilts came out of the woodwork adding two singles to her season total. Engel added the team's final hit of the game, a single up the middle.
The Wolves will return to Swisher field tomorrow with 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. match-ups against Minnesota State-Mankato.
