Box Score 2 The Northern State baseball team made it a clean, four-game sweep over Minnesota Duluth as the Wolves won both games of its doubleheader against the Bulldogs Saturday. NSU did it with its offense in game one, winning 14-4 and pounding-out 20 hits. In game two, the Wolves won 3-1 and collected just four hits in the victory.
The Wolves (25-14, 18-10 NSIC) have now won six games in a row. Northern got out to a quick start in the first game as the Wolves scored five runs in the second inning. The big blow for the Wolves came on a bases-clearing, three RBI double for
Matt Stubbs. Stubbs had a monster game for NSU as he went 4-for-4 with two runs and five RBIs in the win. Stubbs was one of eight Northern players that collected multiple hits in game one.
UMD would get a run in the bottom of the second and fourth innings, but the Wolves kept extending their lead, scoring two runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings and then added three in the seventh.
Maurice Rodriguez collected three RBI in the win while
Buddy Traxler had two.
Cody Johns got the start and the win for NSU in game one. Johns allowed three earned runs and nine hits in four innings of work. Johns struck-out three and walked none in the win.
Andrew Crisman pitched three innings of scoreless relief, allowing just two hits over that stretch.
Game two was a different animal as UMD (14-23, 10-17 NSIC) scored first with a run in the first inning. It was the first time all series that UMD drew first blood. NSU would tie the game at 1-1 in the fourth with an RBI from Stubbs. A
Trevor Sporrer sacrifice fly that scored Rodriguez in the fifth inning was the game-winning run. NSU added one more in the fifth with a Traxler groundout that scored
Alex Cornwell.
Kris Keating got the start on the hill and picked up the win for Northern in game two. Keating improved to 2-1 on the year, going six strong innings, allowing one run on seven hits.
Adam Thompson and
Colton Boucher combined to pitch three innings of shutout relief for the Wolves. Boucher picked up his second save in the win.
NSU concludes its home slate Wednesday as U-Mary comes to town for a midweek doubleheader. Game one begins at 1 p.m. from Fossum Field.
