Winona, Minn. – The Northern State University softball team fell to Winona State University in two games today. Scores for the games were 8-0 and 12-3 in five innings each outing. The Wolves are now 9-22 on the year and 2-14 in the Northern Sun.
Game One Macey Engel recorded the only NSU hit of the game with a single to centerfield in the top of the second inning. Engel along with
Eryn Yancy and
Lindsey Hubler, were the three NSU batters to reach base in the match-up.
Kami Smesmo fell in the game giving up 11 hits, while striking out two. Smesmo is currently 7-11 on the year. The Warriors scored in the second, third and fourth innings to take the 8-0 victory.
Game Two The Wolves scored first in game two led off by
Kelsey Gale who walked in the lead-off at bat of the game.
Eryn Yancy and
Rachel Albright hit back to back singles, one to right field and the next a bunt, to load this bases with Engel stepping to the plate. Macey hit a RBI ground ball to short scoring Gale on the play for the first runs of the game.
Lindsey Hubler then stepped to the plate for a single to centerfield which plated two more runs for NSU.
Rachel Albright started the game on the mound for the Wolves, her third of the season, and threw three complete innings. Albright gave up four earned runs off five hits before
Missy Elkins entered the game in relief.
A Gale walk started off the seventh inning again for the Wolves, as she was sent home by an Albright ground-out to the short stop.
Eryn Yancy reached base by an error by the leftfielder in the previous at bat.
Northern will return home this week to take on University of Mary in a Tuesday mid-week series. The Wolves will remain at home for the holiday weekend with Friday and Saturday games against Bemidji State and Minnesota Crookston.
