Aberdeen, S.D. – The Northern State University softball team cranked out 12 hits to defeat Upper Iowa and snap their 11 game loss streak. The Wolves came away with a spilt on the day moving to 9-21 overall and 2-12 in the Northern Sun.
Game One Northern scored first in the top of the first as
Macey Engel singled scoring
Kelsey Gale and
Eryn Yancy would had singled and doubled to start off the game. The Wolves added two more runs in the next two innings to lead the Peacocks 6-0. NSU secured the victory scoring three more runs in the fourth and sixth innings.
Gale led the team on the day as she was 4-5 from the plate with two runs scored and two RBI. Yancy added another double in the second and an RBI.
Lindsey Hubler crushed her third home run of the season in the sixth to bring the team total to nine runs. All nine runs were earned by the Northern offense in the seven innings of play. Eight of the Wolves nine starters recorded at least one hit in the win.
Courtney Moore notched her first collegiate double in the fourth, scoring
Rachel Albright who had walked in the inning.
Katelynn Dilts also connected for her first career double with a hit to right in the second. Dilts would later come around to score off a
Kelsey Gale single.
Kami Smesmo grabbed the win for the Wolves in the game, marking her seventh of the season. Smesmo gave up four runs on 11 hits, while striking out two in seven innings pitched.
Game Two Lindsey Hubler connected for her second home run of the game in the top of the seventh to mark the Wolves only run of the game.
Katelynn Dilts and
Macey Engel added the other three hits for Northern in the game.
Missy Elkins took the loss for NSU as she gave up seven runs off 11 hits, while striking out three. Elkins is now 2-8 on the year.
Northern will be back in action tomorrow as they travel to Winona State University. Game times are set for noon and 2 p.m. between the Wolves and Warriors.
