Wolves Capture Bottom of the Seventh Win Against Ohio Dominican

Winter Haven, FLA. – The Northern State University softball team spilt in their second day of play at the Rebel Spring Games in exciting fashion with a bottom of the seventh win over Ohio Dominican. The Wolves then went on to fall against Hillsdale College in game two of the day. Northern is now 2-2 on the year after two days of spring break action.

Ohio Dominican took an early lead in the top of the first with one earned run off of NSU junior Kami Smesmo. Smesmo threw her first complete game of the season giving up three hits and striking out three. The win marked her first of the season.

Northern was able to answer back in the bottom of the third to tie up the game at one all. Jess Vernon doubled to left field, the first of her career, to start the inning. Vernon would later score the tying run after Ashley Clapp sacrifice bunted her to third, and Kelsey Gale flew out to center for the sacrifice fly.

The winning run for the Wolves came off the bat of Vernon with no outs in the inning. Senior Lindsey Hubler led off the inning with a single to the left side. Hubler was then replaced by pinch runner Katelynn Dilts who advanced to second off an OD wild pitch. With a runner in scoring position, freshman Lauren Kunz stepped to the plate and singled moving Dilts to third base. Dilts would then score off a fielder's choice by Vernon and seal the win for NSU.

Kelsey Gale and Macey Engel each recorded a hit in the game as well. Northern was nearly perfect in the field giving up only one earned runs while committing no team errors.

Game two put the Wolves up against Hillsdale College and down 0-3 going into the seventh. Northern was able to muster up a run off the bat of Kelsey Gale however it was not enough to secure the win.

The Wolves were led by junior Eryn Yancy who was 3-4 in the game with a double and two singles. Northern was unable to capitalize with runners on base as eight were left stranded. Lindsey Hubler, Lauren Kunz, and Courtney Moore each notched a hit in the loss, while Kalie Maiden drew the only team walk.

After recording her first collegiate win a day ago, Missy Elkins suffered the loss for the Wolves as she gave up two earned runs and nine hits in six innings of work.
