Smesmo's Second Win Lifts Wolves to 3-3 from Winter Haven

Winter Haven, FLA. – For the third day straight the Northern State University softball team came away with a 1-1 record. The Wolves are now 3-3 on the year after a 0-8 loss to No. 12 LIU Post and a 9-4 win against Less-McRae.

In game one versus the Pioneers, the Wolves were no hit by LIU starter Weber. The NSU offense was able to put the ball in play, as Weber tabbed only four strikeouts in the win. Kelsey Gale and Macey Engel reached base by drawing the two walks in the game. Junior Kami Smesmo suffered the loss, leaving her season record at 1-1. The loss marked the second time this season that the Wolves have been shut out in a mercy rule game.

The Wolves bounced back in game two securing the 9-4 win over the Bobcats. After suffering the loss in game one, Smesmo came back to tally her second win of the season giving up no earned runs and striking out two.

Northern was led at the plate by freshman Rachel Albright with three hits, two runs scored and one RBI. Macey Engel and Kalie Madien were both 2-3 from the plate; while Madien nabbed one RBI and Engel nabbed two. Seven different Wolves connected for a hit in the game with Kelsey Gale, Jess Vernon, Ashley Clapp, Lindsey Hubler and Lauren Kunz each garnering one apiece.

The NSU offense scored in every inning but the fourth, with their largest rally coming in the bottom of the sixth. The two teams entered the bottom half of the inning with game score of 5-4 before the Wolves added four runs off of six team singles.

Northern will now take a day break before returning to action Wednesday from Winter Haven. The Wolves will return to play against Southern Indiana and Maryville University at 8 a.m. and 12 p.m. from the Diamond Plex complex.
