Derek Tymesen two RBI single in the top of the second put the Northern State baseball team on the board first and the Wolves held the lead from there on their way to a 4-3 season-opening win over Bethany College Wednesday afternoon in Lindsborg, Kan.
The win is the first opening day victory for NSU since a 9-5 win over U-Mary back in 2011. Tymesen drove in
Trevor Sporrer and
Matt Stubbs with his single. Tymesen finished the day going 1-for-3. Northern looked to add on to its lead later in the second inning with the bases loaded and one out before grounding into an inning-ending double play. The Wolves also failed to score
Maurice Rodriguez from third base when he opened the third inning with a leadoff triple.
After a Bethany run in the fifth cut the NSU lead in half, the Wolves got two insurance runs in the seventh.
Nate Russell scored after he opened the inning with a double to left field and Rodriguez brought in
Eric O' Bryan with a sacrifice fly. Russell was the only player with multiple hits on the day as he went 2-of-4.
Bethany tacked on two more runs in the eighth inning to cut the Northern lead to 4-3 before
Cody Johns ended the inning with a strikeout.
Colton Boucher came on in the ninth inning to close the door and picked up his first save of the season as the Wolves caught Bethany's Sammuel Ramirez stealing to finish the game.
Adam Thompson got the start for Northern in the game. Thompson allowed just one hit over two innings of work while walking two and striking-out three.
John Eckstein pitched the third and the fourth inning while
Dillon Lee pitched the fifth and picked up the win for the Wolves in the contest. Lee gave up one earned run and two hits while recording three strikeouts in the victory. Paul Sauer came on in the sixth inning for NSU while Johns pitched the seventh and eighth innings.
NSU travels down to Tucson, Ariz., now for the Tucson Invitational Tournament during Spring Break. The Wolves will play nine varsity games down in Arizona beginning with a matchup with California State-San Bernardino Saturday beginning at 11:30 a.m.
