Sioux Falls, S.D. – The Northern State University softball team was swept by No. 11 Augustana College in Sunday play with scores of 3-4 and 1-7. The Wolves slide to 8-14 on the year and 1-5 in the conference after suffering a five game loss streak.
Game One
Augustana scored quickly in the first and third innings to lead 4-0 in the game before the Wolves answered back in the fifth and sixth innings.
Lindsey Hubler led off the top of the fifth with a double to center field.
Lauren Kunz stepped to the plate with
Taylor Kontaxis, the pinch runner for Hubler, on second and the opportunity to put NSU on the board. With the speed of Kontaxis from second the Wolves scored their first run of the game, as Kunz singled to center.
Northern added two more in the top of the sixth however came up just short to record the victory.
Eryn Yancy smashed her first home run of the season, a two run shot to left, after
Rachel Albright walked the at bat prior. Hubler singled in the top of the seventh to keep the Wolves hopes alive, however two strikeouts and a ground out held the women short of tying the game.
The 3-4 loss was suffered by Kami Smemso (6-6) who is now .500 on the year. Smesmo gave up four earned runs on seven hits while striking out four in the game.
Game Two
In the top of the fourth inning
Rachel Albright connected for her third home run of the weekend, and sixth of the season, with a blast to right center. Albright's long ball tallied the only hit for NSU on the day.
Northern starter
Missy Elkins (2-5) was unable to hold off the powerful Viking offense giving up seven earned runs on 11 hits. Elkins walked five Augie hitters in the loss.
The Wolves will look to bounce back this week with match-ups against Minnesota Duluth, Concordia-St. Paul and Minnesota State. Due to the potential for winter weather game locations and times are unclear. Stay tuned to northernstatewolves.com for all the latest game updates.
