The Northern State baseball team snapped a four-game skid with a doubleheader sweep over Wayne State Sunday afternoon in Wayne, Neb., in NSIC action. The Wolves took game one 6-3 and got out of a bases-loaded-jam in the bottom of the ninth to hang on for a 6-4 win in game two.
Clayton Nutting,
Eric O' Bryan and
Matt Stubbs each collected three hits in the doubleheader for NSU (9-9, 3-5 NSIC). Stubbs added three RBI and three runs in the double dip while O'Bryan, Nutting and
Buddy Traxler each added two RBI on the day.
Things got off to a rocky start for the Wolves as Wayne State (11-9, 4-2 NSIC) took an early 3-0 lead in game one. However, a four-run top of the third pushed the Wolves in front for good. Nutting got the inning going with an RBI single down the right field line that scored
Robert Fahlin. Stubbs then delivered a two RBI single through the left side to plate Nutting and O'Bryan while
Robbie Rocamora brought in
Riley Shintaffer with a sacrifice fly to top-off the five-hit inning for NSU. Traxler added two more insurance runs in the seventh with a two RBI double that scored Rocamora and Stubbs.
Colton Boucher did not need the extra help, however, as he went the distance, striking-out seven and allowing six hits in seven innings. Boucher improves his record to 2-2 on the year with the win. It was Boucher's second complete game of the year.
Game two was an exciting affair as the Wolves got on the board first in the first inning when Stubbs scored on a wild pitch. WSC would answer in the bottom of the second to tie the game up at 1-1. Stubbs brought in O'Bryan in the fifth to put the Wolves briefly in front again before the Wildcats answered in the bottom of the frame to tie it back up.
In the seventh, Nutting doubled to score O'Bryan again and then O'Bryan doubled to right center in the eighth to score
Kasey Gengler and
Tyler Gripentrog to open up the lead NSU lead to 5-2. The Wolves got another run across in the ninth with a
Casey Bohms single to make it 6-2. After Wayne got two runs in the bottom of the inning and loaded the bases with two outs,
Dillon Lee came on to close the door and get his first save of the season.
Cody Johns pitched strong for the Wolves and moved to 2-2 on the year with the victory. Johns pitched eight innings and allowed one earned and struck-out five in the game two win.
Northern returns to action, weather permitting, Wednesday with a midweek doubleheader against Sioux Falls on the road. Game one is set to begin at 1 p.m.
