Wayne, Neb. – The Northern State University softball team dropped a pair of five inning games to Wayne State College. The two game scores mirrored each other at 4-14 in five innings. The Wolves slide to 8-12 overall and 1-3 in the Northern Sun.
Game One
The Wildcats scored in every inning, with a game high six in the third.
Kami Smesmo took the loss after giving up six earned runs while striking out two.
Missy Elkins entered the game with one out in the bottom of the second. Elkins gave up eight earned runs off nine hits in the loss.
The NSU offense scored four earned runs in the loss led by
Rachel Albright who sent a home run to right center in her first plate appearance of the game. Albright added a single and two RBI in the top of the fifth.
Kelsey Gale connected for a double with one RBI, while
Jess Vernon notched a single in the same inning.
Ashley Clapp tallied the teams fifth hit of the day, a single to left center.
Game Two
A seven run bottom of the fourth secured the mercy rule victory for the Wildcats in game one.
Kami Smesmo (6-5) recorded the loss of Northern after giving up seven earned runs.
Rachel Albright entered the game in relief, giving up seven earned runs of her own.
Albright led the Wolves with two RBI on the day, after crushing a home run to center field.
Kelsey Gale scored on the on Albright home run after reaching base on a single to right center. Gale recorded the team's first RBI scoring
Courtney Moore who singled through the left side.
The Wolves will take on the Augustana Vikings tomorrow from Sioux Falls. Game times are set of 1 and 3 p.m. from Bowden Field.
