Aberdeen, S.D. – The Northern State University softball team kicked off the 2014 NSIC season with MSU Moorhead, earning a split. The Wolves are now 8-10 on the year and 1-1 in Northern Sun play. NSU took game one with a score of 5-0, while fell in game two 0-3 in five innings. Due to the facility having no lights the game met regulation time of five innings and was called because of darkness. Games were played at the home of Presentation College Football due to poor weather conditions in Moorhead.
Game One
The two teams were scoreless after three innings of play from Aberdeen, as
Eryn Yancy stepped to the plate in the top of the fourth. Yancy singled to left field and later scored off a
Lindsey Hubler double in the left field gap.
Northern added four more runs, three earned, in the top of the fifth to seal the victory.
Kelsey Gale,
Rachel Albright, and
Ashley Clapp singled in the inning and came around to score, while Yancy added a double to left and two RBI. The Wolves had sharp eyes at the plate recording six walks in the win.
NSU ace
Kami Smesmo recorded her sixth win of the season throwing a complete came shutout. Smesmo gave up five hits, all singles, and struck out a season high ten Dragon batters. The Wolves were solid defensively giving up no errors in the win.
Game Two
The Dragons scored two in the bottom of the second inning, while adding one more in the fifth to cap the victory.
Missy Elkins took her fourth loss of the season giving up two earned runs on four hits with one strikeout.
The Northern offense was unable to produce with runners in scoring position as four Wolves were left on base. Only two NSU runners reached third in the game, as the Wolves tallied four singles hit by Gale, Hubler, Yancy, and
Lauren Kunz. MSU starter Nordby snapped
Rachel Albright's 12 game hit streak as she stepped to the plate for two ground outs.
The Wolves will travel to Wayne State College and Augustana College this weekend for NSIC play. Saturday NSU will take on the Wildcats of Wayne State before traveling to take on the Vikings of Augustana. Doubleheaders are set for 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. each day.
