The Northern State baseball team finished up a strong trip to Arizona as the Wolves closed out the week with a doubleheader sweep over Bemidji State Friday in Tucson. The Wolves (6-4) picked up a 5-0 victory in game one and a very impressive 12-1 win game two.
In game one, NSU got a complete game four-hitter from starter
Colton Boucher. Boucher struck-out two and walked three in the victory, evening his record to 1-1 on the season. Offensively, the Wolves used a four-run bottom of the first to open the game and take control early.
Danny Fischer opened the scoring for the Wolves when he drove-in
Eric O' Bryan. Fischer also got an RBI single in the fourth inning for Northern.
Derek Tymesen broke the game open with a three RBI double in the first to score
Riley Shintaffer,
Matt Stubbs and
Robbie Rocamora. That was all the support Boucher needed the rest of the way.
In game two, the Wolves tallied 13 hits in the game and scored all 12 of their runs in the final four innings. After Bemidji State took a 1-0 lead in the second, NSU answered to tie the game in the fourth with a
Robert Fahlin double that scored Shintaffer. Northern capitalized in the fifth after a BSU error as Shintaffer put Northern ahead for good with a triple that brought home Stubbs and
Clayton Nutting. Shintaffer had three RBI in the win.
A six-run sixth busted the game open for Northern as
Casey Bohms, O'Bryan, Stubbs and Fahlin all collected RBI's in the inning. Tymesen brought home two in the inning for the Wolves as both he and Nutting collected two hits in the game two win. Fahlin went 3-for-3 at the dish in the contest. The Wolves added three more runs in the top of the seventh to add to their margin.
Cody Johns also pitched a complete game for NSU on the day as he allowed just four hits while striking-out four in the victory as he improved to 1-1 on the year.
Northern opens NSIC play next weekend as the Wolves travel to Sioux Falls to play a four-game set with Augustana. The Wolves and Vikings will play doubleheaders on both Saturday and Sunday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. both days.
