Senior Night Photo Gallery
Damonta Henry's last-second, game-tying three-point attempt went halfway down and out as Northern State held on for a 72-69 victory over U-Mary Friday night inside Wachs Arena.
The Wolves survived four three-pointers from Henry the final 3:39 of the contest as they saw their 14-point lead slowly slip away down to three points with 17 seconds left as Mary held the ball for one final shot.
Seth Bachand led the Wolves with 13 points and 13 rebounds on the night. The 13 boards tied a career-high for Bachand as he recorded his second double-double of the season. Bachand also added three assists and a block in the win. Northern improves to 17-10 overall and 12-9 in the NSIC with the victory.
Northern used a balanced attack on offense as 10 players scored in the game for the Wolves.
Mitch White and
Tydan Storrusten each had 11 points for NSU, the 11 points scored sets a new career-high for White as he also dished-out three assists.
Darin Peterka,
Michael Schreiber and
Skye Warwick all added eight points while
Jared Hannigan chipped in with seven and also had a pair of steals. Peterka recorded a game-high three steals in the win.
Northern shot 43 percent (24-for-56) from the floor on the night and hit 9-of-18 from three-point range. The Marauders (7-19, 5-16 NSIC) shot 44.1 percent (26-for-59) and hit 7-of-18 (38.9 percent) from beyond the arc. NSU made 15-of-21 (71.4 percent) from the free-throw line while Mary went 10-for-15 (66.7 percent).
The two teams were pretty even statistically on the night as both pulled down 36 rebounds. Mary had a 34-28 advantage in paint points and the Marauder bench outscored the Wolves' reserves 33-22 in the game. Northern scored 15 points off of 15 U-Mary turnovers while the Marauders scored 12 points off of 12 NSU miscues.
The Wolves led for much of the game, taking the lead for good with 11:50 to go in the first half on a
Spencer Pankonin layup that put them up 13-11. Northern went on a 13-4 run and led by as many as 11 in the first half before Mary whittled the lead down to six, 37-31 at the break. Midway through the second period, the Wolves went on a 17-7 run and held their largest lead of the game with 4:06 remaining at 66-52 before the Marauders went on their stretch-run which fell short.
Friday night was Senior Night in Wachs Arena as Hannigan and
Trent Zomer were honored prior to the game as they play their final regular season games for the Wolves. Northern closes-out the regular season Saturday night at 7:00 as Minot State comes to town.
