Joe Gomez took home the 197-pound title in the Red Division at the MSU Moorhead Dragon Open on Sunday to lead the Northern State wrestling team. Gomez went a perfect 3-0 on the day to take the championship. It is the second year in a row NSU has won an individual title at the Dragon Open. Sean Havlovic won the 157-pound title last year. Tanner Olson placed second at 165 in the Red Division as well for the Wolves Sunday.

Gomez opened the day in impressive fashion as he recorded an 18-1 technical fall over Concordia-Moorhead's Kyle Willette. Gomez followed that up with a 4-3 win in the semifinals over St. Cloud State's Trae Story before registering a 4-1 decision in the championship match over VJ Giulio.

Olson won his first two matches of the day via decision over Zach Barber of Concordia-Moorhead (7-1) and over MSUM's Casey Williams (4-3) before losing in the title match to SCSU's Josh Berg, losing a hard-fought 5-4 decision.

David Murphy was Northern's next-best finisher at the open as he took third place at 184 in the White Division. Murphy went 3-1 on the day, winning all three of his matches by way of pin. After losing his opening match, Murphy got his first victory with a pin over Ridgewater's Schoen Kichler. After that, Murphy pinned Concordia-Moorhead's Drew Peterson in the consolation semis before winning the third-place match over teammate Quace Wright with a pin in the first period. Wright went 2-2 on the way to his fourth-place finish.

Sunday was the Wolves' final tournament of the season. Northern returns to action with its first dual of the season as Chadron State comes to Wachs Arena for a 7 p.m. match on Thursday. It will be NSU's final competition before the winter break.
